Earlier this week, I was happy to speak at the World Health Organization Community Protection Partners meeting, which brought together local, community-based, civil society and partner agencies to discuss progress, gaps, and priorities for action in delivering strengthened community protection outcomesOver the years, we've made significant strides in recognizing the importance of engaging with communities and establishing mechanisms for feedback and collaboration. There are countless 'bright spots' that showcase the invaluable role communities play in prevention, detection, and response to health emergencies. However, despite progress in promoting community agency, true co-design with communities remains elusive. Despite repeated calls for greater involvement in planning and decision-making, practical challenges persist in translating these aspirations into everyday workflows and practices. The conversation generated numerous insightful questions and comments, underscoring the complexity of community engagement and highlighting the need for systemic changes to ensure that all voices are not just heard but are valued and utilized in decision making. I look forward to continuing the discussion and exploring how we can overcome these challenges together.
