POSTGRADUATE STUDIES (CORAL REEFS): Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management (University of Miami)The Master of Professional Science Degree in Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management provides students with advanced training in the theoretical aspects of tropical marine ecology, as well as the practical aspects needed to begin a career in this field. Theory focuses on nearshore, benthic ecosystems common to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide (coral reefs, seagrasses, and mangroves) and emphasizes threats facing these ecosystems. Practical aspects of the course include field methods and techniques, taxonomy and identification of common vertebrates, invertebrates, algae and marine plants, GIS and remote sensing of shallow water marine environments, scientific diving (through the American Academy of Underwater Sciences), and small boat handling (through the Department of the Interior’s Motorboat Operator Certification Course). This degree is excellent preparation for technical positions in marine conservation and management and marine ecosystem science at one of a number of state and federal agencies, institutions, and NGOs.LEARN MORE HERE: https://lnkd.in/eGwC_5Yf#coralreefs #masters #postgraduate #careers #careerdevelopment #science #tropical #ecosystemmanagement #tropicalmarineecology #marineecology

CORAL REEF NEWS: Coral reef recovery could get a boost from an unlikely source: Sea cucumbers, the janitors of the seafloorSea cucumbers, scavengers of the seafloor that resemble the cylindrical vegetable, have been consumed as a delicacy in Asia for centuries. But in recent decades, they’ve been severely over-harvestedto a point that they are now quite rare.New research I helped conduct suggests their repopulationcould play an important role in protecting and revitalizinganother type of endangered marine organism: corals. Coral reefsare in decline around the world partly due todiseases, some of which are associated with sedimenton the seafloor.Read full story here: https://lnkd.in/eCFxanfT#coralreefs #coralnews #seacucumbers #habitatdecline #habitatrestoration #coralscience #marinescience #coralecology #marineecology #marinebiology

CORAL REEF NEWS: Unprecedented Ocean Temperatures Make This Hurricane Season Especially DangerousIn the main region of the Atlantic Ocean where hurricanes develop, water temperatures are "absolutely stunning," said Brian McNoldy, a senior research associate studying hurricanes at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School.Hotter oceans and sea surface temperatures are like an octane boost for hurricane season, cranking up the fuel that drives the formation and intensity of hurricanes and tropical storms as they move over the ocean. Warmer-than-normal waters in the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico play starring roles in allthe seasonal outlooks for the Atlantic hurricane seasonbeginning 1st June."The whole tropical Atlantic is warmer than its ever been for this time of year," McNoldy told USA TODAY on Thursday. It's sitting at temperatures normally not seen until mid-August. And, "the Caribbean is going crazy."Read full story here: https://lnkd.in/dRmVuJbv#coralreefs #coralnews #caribbean #hurricanes #seasurfacetemperature #climatechange #coralbleaching #globalwarming #marineecology #marinebiology

VERY COOL CORAL RELATED BLOG ARTICLE: An Ocean of Sound - The story that coral reefs are telling us (and why we should listen)Excerpt: Snapping shrimps, for example, from the family Alpheidae, are major musicians. When it’s feeding time, this crustacean creates a network of bubbles with its unique and characteristic claw, which can stun or kill its prey. When many are hunting at the same time, their claws create a sound similar to that of rain, as you heard in the audio clip—a sound so loud, it can compete with the sound produced by the blue whale, the loudest animal in the ocean.Full blog post can be found here: https://lnkd.in/exfsN9zg#coralreefs #bioacoustics #coral #ocean #acoustics #blog #marineecology#marinebiology #marinescience #coralscience #coralreefscience #science
